Frequently Asked Questions about Travelling in South Korea
If it’s your first time travelling to Korea make sure to read these must-know tips for your visit. I’ve lived in Korea since 2022 and wish I knew these things before I moved and traveled to Korea for the first time.
Should I buy a SIM Card or Pocket Wifi?
Whether you choose to use a SIM card or WIFI egg depends on what will work best for your travel needs for your trip. I personally always buy a SIM Card over a pocket WiFi. I always select a SIM card over a pocket WiFi for the following reasons:
- A SIM card provides a local Korean phone number that can be used to make reservations for appointments, cafes, and restaurants.
- Compared to a pocket WiFi a SIM card doesn’t require you to carry an extra device.
- If you rent a portable WiFi you need to return it. This can take up travel time on your trip which can be instead used for your travels.
- The battery of your pocket WiFi can run out of charge. The battery life also drains very quickly if it is used by multiple devices.
Where Can I Buy a SIM Card or Pocket WiFi?
The easiest and most convenient way to purchase a SIM card or Pocket WiFi is online before your trip. Alternatively, if you want to buy it in person, you can purchase it at Incheon Airport or at outlets operated by Korean mobile services such as KT, SKT, and LG U+. You can also find SIM cards at convenience stores like Seven-Eleven, CU, and GS25.
Here are recommendations to order a SIM Card.
- 4G SIM Card – Airport Pickup from Seoul or Busan
- SIM Card (Unlimited Data & T-Money Card) – Pick Up from Seoul or Busan
- eSim (Unlimited Data) – QR delivered via email
- 4G SIM Card (Unlimited) – Airport Pickup at Incheon, Gimpo, Jeju, or Busan
Here are recommendations to rent a pocket WiFi.
- Pocket WiFi 4G Data – Pick Up from Seoul or Busan
- Pocket WiFi (Unlimited 4G Data) – Pick up from Seoul
- Pocket WiFi (4G) – Pick up from Daegu, Busan, or Daegu
Where Should I Stay in South Korea?
This depends on what you want to see and do in South Korea as well as your personal circumstances (budget, length of stay, etc.). If you’re visiting Korea for the first time I recommend visiting Seoul and Busan to check out the main attractions. For recommendations on what to see in Seoul, check out these must-see 10 places in Seoul to add to your travel itinerary.

When is spring in South Korea?
Spring in Korea is one of the best times of the year to visit the country. From the vibrant festivals, the cherry blossoms, and the beautiful blue skies, visitors will be treated to bucket-list activities to try. Need more convincing? Read to find out why.
Why Should You Visit Korea in Spring?
Cherry Blossom Viewings
You’ll get to tick off seeing cherry blossoms on your travel bucket list! South Korea is one of the best places to see the country’s landscape covered in blooming cherry blossoms. From the streets, parks, mountains, temples, and more.
Weather
Spring in South Korea has warm and clear days which makes it perfect for exploring the country outside and experiencing seasonal activities. This includes spring festivals across the whole country, seasonal food items, and popular outdoor activities. For example, take a picnic at a park or explore the cherry-lined streets or parks in South Korea. At night, the weather also turns cool, perfect for those that prefer milder temperatures.
From April to June spring in South Korea is one of the best times to visit. Visitors will be treated to warm weather daily; blooming flowers and green spaces that sweep the whole country. Daily temperatures in spring range from 15 to 25°C.
What Should I Pack for South Korea in Spring?
In the daytime, Korea during spring has warm temperatures but later in the night, it can get chilly. It is important to pack clothes for layering for cooler temperatures. For chilly temperatures remember to pack a light to medium jacket, light sweater, and long clothes for layering. Don’t forget to pack a mask for the yellow fine dust pollution. If you don’t pack a face mask you can easily find a face mask at a pharmacy or convenience store (GS25, 7-11, CU). I recommend getting masks with a KF94 filter or above to filter out the air pollutants. When shopping look for ‘황사마스크.’
Average Temperature: 0 to 22 °C (31 to 71.6 °F)
Spring Clothing Essentials
- Closed-toed shoes such as comfortable slip-ons, sneakers, or loafers. You’ll be walking a lot in Korea to get to a lot of destinations.
- Thin layers – Bring light clothing to layer for cooler days.
- Light Jackets such as a coat, jean jacket, or blazer. If you get cold easily I’d recommend bringing a thicker jacket to deal with the chilly weather.
What Can I Do During Spring in South Korea?
There are a range of activities you can do in South Korea during springtime. Below are a few recommendations to tick off your spring travel bucket list for South Korea.
Day Trip Tour
Don’t limit yourself to exploring the main cities of South Korea. Most travelers only visit Seoul or Busan during a trip to South Korea. I always recommend exploring outside these cities either through a day trip or a couple of days. If you visit in spring in South Korea make sure to check out cherry blossom spots in the countryside or outside the bustling cities. Easy day trips for spring from Seoul include Ganghwa, Pohang, Nami Island, Jeonju, and Gyeongju. Check out more recommendations below.
If you’re a first-time traveler to South Korea, an easy day trip from Seoul is Nami Island. Located about an hour’s drive from Seoul, this island has a variety of activities to try. This includes exploring the scenic tree lanes, exploring the riverside, cycling around the island, and exploring Korean drama filming locations. You can either organize your own transfers to Nami Island which will involve a combination of public transport such as a train, taxi, and ferry or you can organise a day trip tour.
If you’re visiting Jeju Island in spring make sure to check out the canola flower fields. These beautiful yellow blooms cover Jeju from the end of winter till spring. You can easily make a day trip to Jeju’s Canola Fields.

Korea Visas
Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation (K-ETA): Depending on your nationality some countries require a K-ETA to travel to South Korea. Apply before you travel with the official K-ETA site.

In South Korea, the currency used is Korean Won (₩) and I recommend withdrawing cash before you arrive in South Korea. Cash becomes handy when using it at local stores, street stalls, ticket machines, and at older restaurants.
Travel Insurance
If you’re traveling overseas, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance. I always recommend World Nomads as my preferred travel insurance.

Power Adaptors
South Korea uses standard Type C and F sockets with a standard voltage of 220. Note if you have a similar plug socket from your home country that the voltage may be different so be careful with your electronics and use a voltage converter. I always recommend buying a universal adaptor so you can use it in any country (great for future travels) and it offers extra ports for USB cables to charge your devices.
Stay Safe
Staying connected abroad is important for safety and travel. Having a VPN hides your IP address and encrypts your traffic thereby protecting users’ privacy and virtual location. Use NordVPN to safely access content from around the world and have protection when you use public WiFi at cafes, restaurants, or your accommodation.
Stay Connected
Make sure to order in advance a SIM card or pocket WiFi so you can stay connected online for navigation and communication. Depending on your personal preferences you can order a SIM card or pocket WiFi. To get data abroad I recommend Airalo which is an app that allows you to download a prepaid eSIM to your phone in over 190 countries.
Transportation
If you plan to use public transport make sure to order a T-money card in advance which can be used for subways, taxis, and buses. For booking Korea’s high-speed trains, save money and get unlimited rides with a Korea Rail Pass.
Arriving in Korea
Arriving: Most travelers arrive at Incheon Internationational Airport to start their journey. I’m guessing you’ll be starting your trip to Seoul. You can either use public transport (the subway) or order a private transfer to get to your accommodation to check in. If you’re taking public transport take the Airport Express (AREX) to your destination.
