Originally the term “hanok” was used to refer to all traditional Korean buildings, covering architectural works of Confucian shrines, Buddhist temples and royal palaces. However today the term is often used to refer to private dwelling houses. Generally, the term is used to denote architectural work that retains Korean traditional structure and appearance emphasising the wood-floored main hall, kitchen, yard and traditional heating system (ondol). The term hanok, encompasses a range of traditional Korean buildings that come in a variety of layouts and shapes depending on the region and period. This includes consideration of where the mountains reside, where the land contours, where the lake sits, etc.

Sadly in the 1970s when the country was undergoing transformation and prioritised technology over tradition, a large number of hanoks were demolished and replaced by skyscrapers and apartments in their place. However, in the larger cities of Korea, you can still find some small clusters of traditional hanoks.

Hanoks have seen a revival in recent years partly due to historical Korean dramas. Korean TV shows that have been filmed on sites including Jeonju Hanok Village and Bukchon Hanok Village have become popular sites for fans. A few K-Dramas include Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth’ (starring Park Hyun Sik and Park Seo Joon) and ‘Sungkyunkwan Scandal’ (staring Park Yoo Chun).
