Local Tips on Where to Stay in Seoul
If you’re traveling to Seoul for the first time here are some important considerations when deciding on an area to stay in South Korea.
Location
Deciding on where to stay in Seoul is an important factor in influencing whether your trip to Seoul will be great or not. Seoul is a huge city and commutes around the city can take up to 2 hours or longer. Always make sure to check the exact location of your accommodation.
When deciding on an area to stay in Seoul always remember to check if the accommodation is located near public transport. As a general rule, I always recommend booking near a bus stop or a subway station. This is because you’ll be relying heavily on public transport to commute around the city and it’s a great way to reduce walking distance on your trip.
To use public transport in Korea you’ll need a T-money (transportation card) which is an all-in-one travel card that can be used on taxis, trains and buses in Korea. I recommend ordering a T-money card with your SIM card as it works out cheaper than ordering the two products separately.

Duration of Trip
Depending on how long you’re staying in Seoul will help determine the best neighbourhood to stay in. My general advice is that if you’re staying three days or less in Seoul I recommend booking in the main tourist hubs of Myeongdong or Hongdae. This is because these neighbourhoods have convenient locations that are near tourist attractions and local eateries. They are also well-connected by the major train lines which helps minimise commute time around the city to make the most of your trip around Seoul.

FAQs About Where to Stay in Seoul
Here are some of my top frequently asked questions about where to stay in Seoul.
Is it better to stay in Hongdae or Myeongdong?
Both areas are great places to stay for first-time visitors in Seoul. It depends on what you’re doing in Seoul and how you’d best like to use it. While both areas are well-connected by public transport, Myeongdong has a prime location that is near more of the main sightseeing attractions in the city and is great for shopping. Alternatively, Hongdae is also a great base for travels around Seoul, and day trips out of Seoul, but has lots of great local dining options.
Is it better to stay in a hotel or Airbnb in Seoul?
If you’re a first-time traveller to Seoul, hotels are the best option for accommodation in terms of convenience. For example, hotels offer front desk assistance, prime locations in high-foot traffic areas, luggage storage areas and more convenient check-in times. Compared to an Airbnb while they can offer greater independence and a local feel it can be hard to find in Korea and you’ll need to consider security issues and common scams.
How many days are enough in Seoul?
This depends on your budget and what you want to see and do in Seoul. In general, for first-time visitors to Seoul, I’d recommend at least 4 days to see all the main sightseeing attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Lotte World and Bukchon Hanok Village but also leaving time for fun activities like cafe hopping, fun one-day workshops, and day trips outside the city.

Travel Planning Resources ✈️
Here are my recommendations that I’ve tried personally to make your next trip easier.
Public Transport 🚊 If you plan to use public transport make sure to order a T-money card in advance which can be used for subways, taxis, and buses. For booking Korea’s high-speed trains, save money and get unlimited rides with a Korea Rail Pass.
Arriving in Korea ✈️ Most travellers arrive at Incheon International Airport to start their journey. I’m guessing you’ll be starting your trip to Seoul. You can either use public transport (the subway) or order a private transfer to get to your accommodation to check-in. If you’re taking public transport take the Airport Express (AREX) to your destination.
Attractions & Tours 🌟 Klook and GetYourGuide are my preferred platforms for local tours and activities in Korea. They make it easy to compare tours, book experiences and the best deals. You can also download their mobile app where you can easily access your bookings on the go.
Power Adaptors : South Korea uses standard Type C and F sockets with a standard voltage of 220. Note if you have a similar plug socket from your home country that the voltage may be different so be careful with your electronics and use a voltage converter. I always recommend buying a universal adaptor so you can use it in any country (great for future travels) and it offers extra ports for USB cables to charge your devices.
Accommodation 🛌: I book all my accommodation in Korea through Booking.com. They have a wide selection of accommodations worldwide, with flexible booking options and great deals. They also have a Genius Loyalty program where you can get discounts and benefits on selected stays.
Easy Car Rental 🚗 Get hassle-free car rentals on DiscoverCars with a wide selection, competitive prices, and great customer service. Often it’s cheaper than booking direct and you can compare a large range of suppliers to check if you’re getting the best price.
Stay Connected 📶 wherever you go by easily and affordably purchasing an eSim for all your travels. Thanks to Airalo, you’ll get instant access to data and you don’t need to physically swap a plastic SIM card every time you’re travelling to a new country.
Travel Insurance 🛡️ I use World Nomads for overseas travel insurance. Travel with peace of mind knowing you’ll be covered for unexpected events and plan a worry-free journey.
Camera Gear 📸: If you’re curious about the camera gear I’ve used for my photos find out what’s in my camera bag here.

Very useful accomodation guide to Seoul. I have been to Seoul several times and always found it difficult to decide where to stay. Fortunately I was happy with my choice every time. But I feel this was sheer luck. A guide like this would have helped a lot.
I lived in Seocho-gu for two years (sadly, a long time ago now) and was pleasantly surprised to see it on your list. I loved my neighbourhood! But apparently, so said many taxi drivers that drove me home, my street was well-known in the city for its host bars… haha.
Can confirm that Itaewon and Hongdae are excellent neighbourhoods for nights out!! Are bars still allowed to stay open all night long?!
Thanks for this comprehensive guide on Seoul. As a solo female traveler I appreciate knowing the best places for solo travelers to stay and I love the accommodations at Hongdae. Saving this.
Thanks for sharing such an in-depth guide to Seoul. I think I would stay in the areas of Insadong and Ikseondong, which interest me.
This is such an informative guide on where to stay in Seoul. Thank you for sharing such detailed insight!

What a great detailed guide! I’ve never been to Seoul, but it’s definitely on my bucket list, especially during the cherry blossom period. Hongdae seems like a perfect place to stay, as it will be my first time. Is Seoul safe for single travelers?
Hi An Marie! Super touched you found my guide helpful! From my personal experience from living and travelling in South Korea I can definitely confirm that is safe for solo female travellers! I found it safe to travel solo around the country as a female. If you have any other questions feel free to let me know!
Sooo many good options! I would be most tempted to stay in Hongdae for the food, but I think I would be happy anywhere on this list! Such a helpful guide Kelly, thank you!
I have not been to South Korea yet but is very much in my bucket list. Thank you for the many options in accommodation while visiting Seoul. It is useful to have a variety of options including budget and expensive and with many facilities. Thank you for the descriptions on the advantages of staying close to shopping, food, cultural attractions, etc.
What a fantastic guide! Thank you so much for that. I have not been to Seoul, but it’s definitely a destination high up on my bucket list.
What a fantastic guide! Thank you so much for that. Actually, I want to go to Seoul soon, that helps a lot!
There are so many enticing options! While I’d be drawn to staying in Hongdae for the food, I’m sure any destination on this list would bring happiness. Kelly, your guide is incredibly helpful—thank you!
